Organizing the Toy Testing Sisters' Playroom

We recently had the pleasure of collaborating with Mandy from the Toy Testing Sisters to transform her playroom into a more functional, organized, and inspiring space. Known for their expertise in toy reviews, sisters Mandy & Mel have amassed an impressive collection of toys. The challenge? Creating a playroom that could accommodate her growing inventory, keep her kids’ imagination and creativity strong while remaining accessible and visually appealing. Here’s how we made it happen!

Organizing Solutions for a Busy Playroom

Rearranging and Optimizing Storage We began by rearranging the space and adjusting the placement of larger items to create a more functional layout. To maximize storage, we added an additional cubby and installed Home Depot cabinets, making room for better organization. Once the layout was optimized, we sorted the toys into categories—action figures, creative sets, games, puzzles, stuffed animals, and more. Items that were no longer used or loved were set aside for donation, ensuring that the most meaningful and frequently used toys had a designated place.

Product Selection: Storage That Works To achieve a balance of functionality and aesthetics while keeping it budget-friendly, we carefully selected the following products:
- Clear Stackable Bins:
  These bins were a game-changer for smaller toys like Legos, craft supplies, and miniature figurines. The transparency allows Mandy and her kids to see the contents at a glance. See where we used these bins in Mandy’s toy room here.
- Rolling Toy Cart:
  We incorporated a rolling cart for art supplies and toys used daily. This mobile solution can be moved around the room or even into other areas, making cleanup and playtime transitions seamless. - Modular Shelving Units:
  We installed a mix of open shelving and cubbies to create designated zones for different categories of toys. The shelves allowed for an appealing display of larger toys and decorative items, while the cubbies kept bulkier toys contained. We used clear XL Y-Weave bins from Target with bin clips so her kids could easily see the toys in each bin. Here is what she stores in the bins.

Large Cabinets: Mandy didn’t want to spend thousands on built-in cabinets, so we found an affordable and functional cabinet for her. These cabinets from Home Depot are only $200 each and are great for toy rotation. One of the pain points of her playroom was her game storage. She wanted her games to be easier to access for her kids. She had them in a hard-to-reach crawl space under the stairs so we brought them into the main playroom for optimal accessibility. 3. Labeling for Longevity To ensure the system could be easily maintained, we labeled every bin, cart, and shelf. We used bin clips on any bin so each child could help put away toys at the end of the day.

The final playroom was nothing short of magical. With clearly defined zones, a mix of open and hidden storage, and a layout that encourages easy cleanup, Mandy now has a space that’s both practical and aesthetically pleasing.
